As with every year, the end of august brings with it arguably the best show of the year, VW Action, held for the last few years at Santa pod Raceway near Wellingborough.
The weekend began with a meet up and club cruise up to the venue on Friday morning, with those less fortunate and having to work catching up later in the day. For some unknown reason, most of us feel compelled to drive up early in the morning to join the Airport road queue, and be able to get on site as early as possible to prolong the weekend. This year we were again allowed in early, and by the time the gates were due to open we had our tents erected, and were already relaxing and settling down into the vibe of “Action 14”.
Friday afternoon and evening are fairly mellow affair, with time spent catching up with old friends and making new ones, and lots of walking round admiring the many different cars both their for racing and driven for pleasure.
With Saturday morning brings the start of the fun, the track opened early, with VW group only (plus a few intivited guests) run what ya brung, to entertain the crowds, and for those less enamoured of racing there were activities such as the ever popular VW Action olympics and Daily driver show and shine, or you could browse the many traders or autojumble. The track activities carry on right the way through the day, with only a couple of planned breaks, until one of the hghlights of the show, Night racing!
This year the cars again had to meet a minimum standard, and prove it to be able to run, which meant there were plenty of high power fire breathing cars to be watched by the crowds on the bank while the sun dropped below the horizon. On completion of the night racing came the ever popular themed party in the main marquee, this year was a zombie apocalypse theme, with some pretty scary example venturing out after dark, The weedhuggers again provided some excellent costumes which both amused and scared other show goers!!
Sunday morning and along with thick heads came the concours show and shine display, for all those pristine vehicles, some truly outstanding examples always pop up that in some cases may not have been seen for many years. As always the campervan cook off is held in the main marquee before the Brads Auction and then the final price giving in the early afternoon, which this year our very own trophy collector Mr Gelder was part of!!
For those in no great hurry to get home the track is open until late into the afternoon and offers plenty of entertainment to the very end of the show.
For many VW Action is the ‘must do’ show of the year, and every year the crew step up to the plate and deliver, this year was no exception, if you have never been, you really have missed out on a truly great family orientated family show.
